There were rules (no colors on metals, specific charges used for different things, etc) in real life to make this easier, and most heraldry followed these rules. Create a sigil to represent your goal or resolution and carve it into the candle. Sigils range from the very complicated (like the Sigil of Ameth pictured at the top of this. Sigil definition, a pictorial symbol used in ritualistic magic and supposed to have supernatural power: Seven sigils spell out the names of the seven archangels who govern the days of the week. The plume of feathers, or other decoration, worn on or displayed on a helmet the distinctive ornament of a helmet. A sigil is a type of symbol used in magic as a signature for demons or other entities and sometimes describes the goal of the user the outcome of the spell. If you can barely tell what the charges are from more than 30 feet away ( I'm looking at YOU, House Dondarrion!), then effectively, the heraldry is useless. There are five basic types of sigils based on what their purpose is. ( en noun ) A tuft, or other excrescence or natural ornament, growing on an animals head the comb of a cock the swelling on the head of a serpent the lengthened feathers of the crown or nape of bird, etc. By having the ability just to create and use whatever sigil he wants gives GRRM a lot of scope to create more impressive ones and less impressive ones too!īut, like it has been said before, pretty much the whole point of heraldry is not to look badass or impressive, but to serve as "personal ID", and as a rallying point for friendly troops.

There are few particularly badass or impressive coats of arms or sigils in real life, imo. I think that more formal heraldry would suck to be honest.
